Witch hazel is native to eastern North America; Witch-hazel is a large, slow growing understory shrub of the woodlands. It prefers moist well drained rich soils and can grow in full sun to dense shade. The yellow fall flowers occur when no other woody plant is blooming. Seeds are contained in a woody husk and are ejected when ripe.
