Wild prairie crabapple is a showy, ornmental understory native tree. Site preference is full sun in moist well drained soils. The spring white / pink flowers are quite beautiful and attract various pollinators. The branching facilitates songbird nesting and the small “apple” fruit is taken by some birds. Suckering from the base is common and apple scab can defoliate the tree by late summer. Spectacular in bloom, deep pink flower buds open to white flowers. Their fruit is popular with a myriad of wildlife. It’s important to note, prairie crabapple is susceptible to many foliar diseases.
